engine bay, most definitely.
it's a noise of substance.
it is difficult to isolate it when standing at the bay with the engine running, but today i've been able to notice it, just not locate the source....
the cabin filters out the normal engine noise, and so this noise becomes apparent
it is a deep repetive noise that changes RPM with the engine RPM...
Abusot listened to it and thought it was vibration in worn motor mount, which is good thought, but today I noticed that the noise is the last noise I hear after the engine is shut off, for just a couple seconds I hear it peter out as it comes to a stop.
When the engine is shut off, and I'm standing at the bay, I can't isolate the noise, I can't hear the last bit of it.
When I hear the noise by itself, as engine is stopping, it doesn't sound like motor mount noise, it sounds too free moving. When I look at the tranny mount as the engine running, there is no movement there. The engine doesn't move that much, though it moves if the engine is revved, so I think it could use new lower mounts to be perfect.
I think it's either coming from inside the lower engine or the transmission, but the trans is functioning normally.
Only thing I can find is that fluid level might be a little high in trans, otherwise all seems normal. I might change tranny fluid this weekend (it's fairly new, but to correct level) and see if anything changes...
I did have a quart of oil mysteriously disappear last month, but this episode hasn't repeated. Oil level has been steady over last 900 miles.
Engine is running smooth and strong.
