never stranded.
In fact, 7 Saabs over 25 years, all purchased with 60-180K miles, I've only been left on the side of the road by my 87 900 CVT, which I've modified enough for extra horsepower(+about 50) that it isn't fair to include in the mix.
Any car can fail, but the 9000 is a remarkably solid road car.
Read the posts carefully and you'll see that;
1. The 9000 is/was a high end auto with losts of sophisticated (for it's day) accessories, and if you want EVERYTHING to work perfectly this car is a tinkerers delight.
2. Alot of us are "tinkerers" and somewhat anal about our cars (search for posts on "headlight wipers" or "rear side window defrosters" or "remote locking" or especially "seat heaters". Granted, these are things that are nice to have working, but certainly not necessary to get from here to there safely.
2 years ago a got a 91 mazda protege ($100, broken timing belt)for a first car for my son. Got it back on the road with a total of $400 invested, ran great. BUT... a small car, couldn't haul much, only 22 MPG, and my wife worried about my son's safety.
Sold it for $1000, got a 92 9000CD turbo (78K miles)for $1500, and what a difference.
Solid, safe, better milage, much more room, and 2 years of dependable transportation.
Bottom line, any car that's 10 years old will require some maintanance, but few will be as tight, solid, spacious and safe as a 10 year old Saab.
But I do agreee, buy 96-98 for max dependability.
