now with 2 9000s, a '96 CSE and a '95 CS I am very happy with the decision.
As others note, the key is to find a good car. My '96 which I got from an indy in NJ at 90K miles had been especially well cared for and looked and drove like new. It has needed stuff, but only the heater core at 105K was a typical "Saab 9000 issue." The rest is normal car stuff: brakes, exhaust, etc.
The '95 came from a friend who was generally good about maintenance and had most of the service records. It had 138K on it and is driven lightly by my daughter. It was (and kinda still is) at a point where it needs some stuff, but almost all of it is normal car maintenance: radiator, brakes, tires, exhaust. I did CV joint boots, motor mounts, belt and pulleys and a couple other things and just gradually bring it up to reasonable condition for an 11-year old car with 142K on it. I'd take it across the country tomorrow without a second thought.
My thinking is that if you take out stuff that any car needs from time to time (tires, brakes, exhaust, shocks, etc) the 9000 is a really terrific value. They are underpriced for what you get. They absolutely can be finicky and they are quirky, but they are roomy, comfortable, reasonably fast, incredibly safe, fun to drive and don't look like anything else on the road. They are good for most DIY work with just ordinary tools. Do make sure you find a good Saab specialist indy for added support and buy parts from site sponsors. You'll be fine.
And BTW, we used to have a Volvo 940 Turbo wagon. There is no comparison with the 9K. The Saab is in a whole different league. The Volvo always needed something and it was never cheap.
Find a good 9K and you'll be a happy guy.
