Yes, different problem Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Lever probably fell off the tumbler, roachrl, Thu, 2 Feb 2006 12:46:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, if you can't turn the lock, it won't unlock the door. Forget what I said about the lever; the cylinder isn't turning.
Does the key insert all the way? If not, there is something jammed in there you need to remove.
Assuming that the key used to work in that door, then most likely one of the pins in the lock tumbler is jammed. Have you tried lubricating the lock? I would recommend spraying in some silicone or teflon based lubricant. Then stick the key in and try to turn it back and forth. Don't force it, just work it back and forth a little to loosen it up. If that doesn't work, try another squirt, and repeat.
If that doesn't work, you've got two choices:
1 - if you're mechanically inclined, remove the door panel, remove the door handle (two bolts), and remove the lock cylinder. You can remove it from the metal sheath it's in, and try to find out why it is jammed.
2 - take it to an automotive lock specalist. He will probably have some industrial strength lubricants, and maybe a tool or two to loosen it up. If that doesn't work, he'll probably do #1 for you.
You can simply replace the lock cylinder, but getting it keyed properly will be a major pain. Most likely you'd end up with one key for the driver's door, and a different key (the old one) for the rest of the car.
Option 3 - remove the lock cylinder from the passenger door, and swap it with the cylinder from the driver's door. Now the passenger door won't unlock with the key, but that's usually not a horrible thing.
