Synthetic doesn't hurt, but it's not worth it to me....

I would far prefer to see the oil changed every 3000-3500 miles. If you're changing at this interval, you're wasting your money on synthetic or semi-synthetic.

Decent (not even great) quality dino (non-synthetic) is my choice. It's easily half as expensive and isn't going to degrade all that much in 3000 miles. Sometimes, if rarely, a switch to synthetic can cause oil leaks due to the smaller molecule size of the synthetic, which can creep past seals that keep dino in.

I run my car in Connecticut, and use 10W-40 year round.

I like to change my oil every 3000 miles (give or take) in part so that I can take a look around underneath the car regularly to see how the multiple oil leaks are progressing and check on other items for wear.

If you envision longer stretches, you could probably get away with double the intervals with synthetic, but again, it's about twice the money, so it's a savings of inconvenience mainly.

I wouldn't turn down your mechanic's feeding the rebuilt engine synthetic, except that because it's a rebuild, you'll be draining and refilling that oil in 250 miles. Awfully expensive break-in oil!
