unless you are comparing it to a Ford Crown Victoria-type car. A transverse-mounted engine with Bosch fuel injection, front wheel drive is pretty much the norm for most recent cars! OK, I will admit that the turbo and the trionic engine control systems are different, but most of the car is pretty straightforward and much easier to work on than many more recent cars such as my other car, an Audi A4. If you came in with a VW of some sort (which isn't that rare and shares most parts with Audi), I wonder if your mechanic would have the same reaction. If so, you need a different mechanic. You may want to state what city you live in and ask people on this board for recommendations.
The intake manifold is the large shiny cast-aluminum assembly attached to the top-rear of the engine. It is probably not leaking itself, but things that are attached to it, i.e. the vacuum lines and other hoses, are likely culprits. Again, I would start with the basic maintenance of replacing the vacuum lines: I will almost guarantee that you will find at least one rotted line on a 10-year-old car, supplies should be less than $10, then reevaluate your position. And yes, it is possible that the Fuel Pressure Regulator is leaking, but there are very easy tests to determine if it is - do a search of the archives using the search function in the upper right corner of this page.
