before i try to loosen a torx or philips screw i put the bit in it and wack it with a 1 lb deadblow hammer 2 or 3 times. i usually do this to the second screw after i strip the first one cause i didn't wack it. then use the ninja method to loosen it (don't ease it, give it a good shot in the right direction.
make sure the head is clean before you try. you need the full depth of the bit in the socket.
even with all these precautions, they strip sometimes. the magic tool is a set of left-handed drill bits. they cut properly with a drill set on reverse and on a torx or philips usually bounce enough to loosen the screw. i know snap-on sells them; hopefully you can find a more reasonably priced alternative.
using these, more often than not a broken stud will loosen to the point you can grab it with vicegrips or good sharp dikes.
of course if you can't reach it...
