I watch my Autometer gauge all the time too. Here is what I'm reffering to based on factory bulletin:
Normal operation:
at idling speed, an engine at the sea level should show a steady vacuum between 14" & 22" HG. Quick opening and closing should cause vacuum to drop below 5" and rebound to 23" or more.
Ignition problem or sticking valves:
with engine idling, continued fluctuation of 1" to 2 " may indicate ignition problems. Fluctuation of 3" to 4" - sticking valves.
Intake leakage, valve timing or low compression:
Much lower vacuum reading than normal may indicate vacuum leakage or very late valve timing or worn piston rings.
Exhaust back pressure:
From idling, slowly increase engine speed to 3K. Vacuum should be equal to or higher than idle vacuum.
Cylinder head gasket leakage:
With engine idling, vacuum gauge will drop sharply every time the leak occurs. The drop will be from steady reading to 10-12". The drop will be much bigger if leak is between two cylinders.
Hope that helps. I keep this info in my car.
Victor
