I am not a Saab owner (yet). Have been looking for a neat 9000 for a long time, and came up with two this week. Could you share your opinions with me on them?
car 1 is 1995 CS with 120k miles, 5 speed, original clutch, timing chain, head gasket. Nice and clean, original owner took good care of it, new DI, exhaust, tires, heater core, brakes. Radiator changed 7 years ago. The car drives with good, and engine sounds quiet. I brought the car to a very reputable Saab mechanic recommended from this board. They said the car was very nice, except the only problem is that the head gasket started leaking, judging by the exhaust gas presented in coolant. They mechanic said I have two choices, retorque for $170, and see how much longer it can go, or fix it for $1000 - $1400 (depending on if they'll find anything else wrong in the process of headgasket job). The owner asked for $3200. The price would be $4600 after the headgakst job, which I am not sure if it's a bit high for a 95 CS. Plus I heard the clutch or slave cylinder don't last very long on these cars, which would be another $1000. The mechanic said timing chain is usually quite reliable on 95, so he can't comment on when, or whether those will fail.
Another car is a '97 CSE with 120k miles, for sale by a mechanic. This one also has some major items done, brakes, heater core, a NEW auto tranny in 2004 (he said he bought from Saab for $3200 and installed himself). Original DI, radiator, etc. The seller asked for $4500. The mechanic said he is the second owner since two years ago. The new auto transmission from two years ago is very tempting, but I have not seen the personally (it's quite far from where I live). Plus I am not sure how to verify all the things he said, he did all the work himself. He is a mechanic afer all, if he is a determined to hide some defects I probablly wouln't find out.
I've been reading this board for a while, but still have no personal experience on these cars. So any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
