mark and aaron, thanks for the advice. The owner of the 95 is a very pleasant guy to deal with, and seems to have given the car a lot care. He was suprised to learn the headgasket thing. But as far as the negotiation went, I tried $2400 and he already thought it's too low -- actually I had the feeling he would not go below $3k. So I guess I'll pass it, unless it can be had for $2k.
I will check the '97 next Saturday when some other indy's are open, hopefully the car is still on available -- not sure if you have noticed this: 9k's move very slow on market, I saw many being posted over and over for a long time and still no takers. Granted, all of them have various issues, which should be normal for cars 10 years old. But a similar Honda will be sold much quicker.
Now here are some technical questions. How can I tell a new auto tranny from a rebuilt one other than looking at receipt? Is there any easily accessible tags or serial numbers to look for on the tranny body? If the mechanics has the receipt, what should I look for on that receipt? Are there any general traps or stuffs that I should be aware when buying cars owned by mechanics? Not that I had issues with mechanics generally. Burnt a couple times in the past by unhonest ones, and it's kinda hard to develop trust again on one I did not know. Thanks in advance
