From above, it helps if you have thin arms. I do, and this is my approach -
I unbolt the little metal bracket holding the dipstick in place, so the dipstick can move. I then take a piece of rope and *gently* tie the dipstick over to the side. I don't remember, but I may even remove the upper dogbone engine mount - it's just two bolts, nothing big. Any hoses in the way I tie back with rope.
Next, I get a plastic garbage bag, a rubber glove, and some duct tape. PUt the rubber glove on one arm, cut a small hole in the bottom of the garbage bag, and slide the bag up over your arm. Tape it at the wrist, and at one or two places up your arm. In my case, I'm left handed, so this works pretty well coming in from the passenger side. Your arm is now protected from grease, and the plastic is nice and slippery. I find I can squeeze my arm back there. It is still working blind.
Alternatively - jack up and support the right front of the car, and remove the tire. If you reach in through the hole in the fender liner where the driveshaft comes out, you can reach up and behind the alternator. For more room, remove the plastic fender inner liner. It only takes about 15 minutes, and give you much better access to reach back around. And if worse comes to worse and the bolts are stuck, you're on the way to removing the alternator (which I've had to do once or twice) to get at the VR.
