Sorry, I posted this as a no-name earlier...
Hi Jon,
Here's my previous post on this:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9000/index.html?bID=234336
Basically, there were intermittent non-start periods which became less intermittent (ie, permanent). As it says in the above post, no crank at all...Just a click when the key was turned to start.
This has happened once before, and at that time the alternator was replaced, and the car started trouble free for 2 years. I did not think that it was the alternator when I did a quick analysis, because the battery had 11.9 volts across the terminals, which seemed reasonable to me. But when I had the tow truck come, the driver managed to jump it with his charger pack, and a large spark flew off of the alternator. He determined at that point that the alternator was not running.
As far as the amount of time for the labor goes...They essentially told me it would be "up to 2 hours", and that it could be less, but they were not sure exactly how long it would take. I guess what I'm really wondering is should I be expected to pay for the voltage regulator work if that regulator does not go into my car, and it didn't solve the problem?? Especially when that work is more expensive than the alternator labor?
The other thing I should note is that I have not seen the bill, and this is all based on what I've gathered from phone conversations with the billing/phone person, not with the mechanic himself. I'm just trying to get people's opinions so that when I do get over there this afternoon, I can take a look at the bill and feel justified in my assesment of what they're charging me.
