You can check for leaks by listening at the connections with a piece of tubing. I would check because the hoses are expensive. You can also take the hoses to a hydraulic line manufacturer and they will make a custom hose for very cheap.
The dremel method works very well. Soak it with penetrant over night and see if it comes off, but be careful. If it doesn't come loose, cut away. When you put it back together, lubricate the threads with refrigerant oil.
Best method is to vacumm, but I didn't do it and my AC is fine. What I did was to evacuate the system at the high side. Then I loosened the connections, and on final removal, I quickly covered up the openings.
On assembly, I purged the new hose with some rifrigerant and quickly attached.
Then I put in a can of refrigerant, evacuated the system again, another can, evacuate, and then I did final fill. The evacuation a couple of times ensures that you have almost completely new refrigerant, eliminating the necessity of vacumming.
If I had to do it again, I would replace the drier. Its cheap and its what takes moisture out of the system which is the reason to vacumm.
