The gas station gave me back a fully charged battery. I installed it after coming home. The car started immediately. There was initial loud valve tapping noise with some smoke coming up from the cat. But that's because the car has been sitting in the driveway since Monday morning. It soon quiet down somewhat to an acceptable level. The smoke also went away. I took it out for a spin around the block. The voltage indicator shows 13.9 to 14.1 volts. It would stall if I turn the corner pressing the clutch.

So it is more involved than I thought. Don't think it is the alternator. The car has been running with a 6 flash CEL since day 1 almost four years ago (O2 sensor). The O2 sensor is relatively new (oem, not spliced).
