9k stranded, update

I posted the other day my 94 cs turbo stranded on I-287 and was towed home. I suspected initially it was the battery because it wouldn't take charge from the trickle charger. Brought the battery down the street from the office to the garage where I bought it. The verdict was the battery was good. That means the trickle charge is bad.
The 3 Amp trickle charger has been with my for almost 25 years. It doesn't owe me anything. So now I need a recommendation for a trickle charger from you guys. That's the first thing.
I can then next start to speculate what went wrong. Yesterday I was able to crank the starter for maybe two seconds. It wasn't long enough to start the car. My sense if the battery has enough juice to crank longer the car would start. So what could cause the battery to drain? My guess would be a bad alternator or voltage regulator. That's where I'll be focusing this weekend.
The belt is good.
Any other ideas appreciated.
