You should not have to repack the needle bearings pulling the tripod bearing out of the shaft using a gear puller. If the needle bearings came loose, you are probably beter off with a new one anyway. But when I did two weeks ago, I did save one tripod bearing by repacking the needle bearings of one leg of one of the tripod. I cleaned up three drive shafts I save in my garage. Thinking it is such a messy job and I had already started it why not do all of them.
The tripod bearing and the needles are kept in the shaft by a thin metal ring punched at 180 deg apart so it deforms to retain both the bearing and needles in. Over time the metal ring deformations got worn out so the bearing slips out. You can repack it and deform the ring again after packin using a punch.
