Over the weekend I finally put the T-25 rebuild kit to use. Since I was waiting for parts I ran into road blocks with the engine replacement. It is sort of an experiment for me rebuilding thr turbocharger. I've got a few of them in the garage. Four at last count. One I bought last Christmas has no play at all. I think I'll use that one on the new engine. The rest have varying degrees of play.
I started from the worst one. This is on the 95cse I removed a few weeks ago to put in a td04. After opening it up, I soon learned there are three critical parts. What I am assuming is both impellers have to be in good shape with no splintered blade. I also need a good shaft too. These critical parts are the two oil lubricated bearing and the thrust bearing. The turbocharger from the 95cse failed miserably. The bearing on the exhaust side are so badly worn it is cracked in pieces. It got so worn the cylindrical housing for the bearing is scoured. So I had to chuck the core.
I finished one from the lot. But the result is not what I expected. The one I finished rebuilding has a tiny little play. So I don't know what to make of it. I found the finger is a very good judge on the shaft play. It is not scientific but the finger can tell whether there is play or not.
But I completely ignore the one from the bad engine focusing on the lateral play not knowing until tonight the longitudinal play. I'll open it up to check, when I have time.
