I did my son's '95 last year. I built the PVC tool from Winger's description and it works like a champ. Email me if you want to borrow it by mail. The check valves are available at eEuroparts, #4161766A for the feed valve and #4161766RV for the return. I broke one as well. You can follow the posts here on how to force the rigid fuel line on to the new valve, or just do as I did - I left the plastic barb inside the rigid line and slid a piece of high pressure flexible fuel line over it and over the new valve barb - about 3 inches total. I used stainless steel clamps on both ends. I used the same flexible fuel line to connect up the new pump insert inside the cannister. Easier and more flexible than dealing with the original plastic.
