The plastic tool did not work for me either, just small enough that it flexed
and slipped. Used a wood tool, needed 20" crossbar on it to finally turn it.
3/4" thick but NOT thinner should work. I also coated area with silicone spray to help release.
Mine was VERY tight, get a good fit with your wood dimensions and use stout stock. Use screws to secure the wood pieces. Don't be discouraged, it can be
amazingly tight. Once you are ready to reinstall coat threads on tank and ring with never seize or equivalent just in case. Good luck
