I guess you're talking about the Esso LT71141 "lifetime" transmission fluid in the 5HP24 automatic transmissions.
If you buy it at BMW it's ridiculously expensive, if you buy it at VW or Jaguar it's only expensive ($11/liter?) but if you're lucky you'll find a local transmission shop that'll sell it to you cheaper. Pretty much every Euro automaker sold in the US except Mercedes have used that transmission fluid in something.
At one time ZF said this stuff was required, now they've changed that to "recommended" and there's a bunch of different fluids whose manufacturers claim they'll work in those transmissions (Redline D4, Amsoil, and the Pennzoil Universal synth ATF, to name three I know people have used.)
Someone over at the bobistheoilguy.com forums who claimed to have been involved in formulating the LT71141 says it's a very high-quality non-synthetic ATF with a lot of anti-foaming additive, not anything particularly exotic. I can't speak to the accuracy of his information.
