I have owned a 2005 Suzuki Aerio SX (Sport Xover) for about a year. It does meet and actually beat the 9K in terms of maximum cargo volume. Although, I would argue that the 9000 is much more practical in that regard, since the square footage of the cargo area is larger, whereas the Suzuki is taller. Having driven it for a year after owning my '87 9000T for 10 years, I am ready to go back to a 9000. The Suzuki is great for a commuter, with much better throttle response and fuel economy 5-6 MPG better than the 9000. It has an insanely tight turning radius, which is great, and the car is light which make it really fun to throw around. But, the ride quality is very poor, presumably due to a super short wheelbase and the light weight, among who knows what other factors. The torque, which seems great with an empty car, vanishes when you fill the cargo area, add a passenger, and then drive mountain roads over 5000' elevation. The handling is also nothing to write home about. It feels ok around town, but it's a whole different animal on the open road. It's skittish in emergency lane change type maneuvers (ok once set in the corner), and it does not absorb bumps well at all. Plus, it's very sensitive to crosswinds.
Anyhow, it's a fun car and I really do like it, but I just can't bring myself to love it like I do the 9000.
The love people have for their 9000s is one of the reasons that my search for a '96-98 9000 may take quite some time!
