First of all, this is still one of the safest cars you can buy hands down. If you were to buy a cheap new car, it still wouldn't be as safe, despite the lack of side airbags. I don't really have that must trust in the crash test results that are available. What I do trust is the extensive, extensive testing Saab did, and all of the over-engineering that went into the safety of these cars. Not to mention that this car was picked by Folksam for several years in a row as one of the safest made.
Where do you live? On the main page of this site there is a listing for Saab mechanics by state.
As for no synthetic oil...where did you hear that? These cars NEED synthetic oil, or at least semi-syn. The service intervals are NO different from any car. There are users here that have gone over 10k between oil changes, and the results of a UOA were fine. (BTW I do NOT advocate going that long, even with synthetic. I use semi-syn and change religiously every 3k miles)
If the car has been well maintained, it will be very reliable. Yes there are problem areas and stuff will need to be replaced, but you'll find that with any car. While the repair costs for Saabs is expensive, they don't break down that often and you won't find another car that's as safe, reliable and AWESOME to drive as this Saab!
