Since nobody brought it up yet...
Run the self-test/ calibration on the headunit:
press AUTO + vent (the lower-right small button) SIMULTANEOUSLY.
The headunit should now run through its settings , illuminating the indicator lights one by one.
At the same time the display should indicate '0' briefly. If any other number appears there is a fault in the ACC system, but not necessarily in the headunit. I once had a '3' on the display and found out the connector on the back of the unit wasn't re-seated properly.
Your 1993 will have ACC2 (with an 'OFF' button) and will only display the number of faults, not the nature.
This may solve the problem or may not, but IMHO it should be the first thing to do on the malfunctioning system.
