Thanks for the insight but the nut was backed out and the bearing was unloaded. I just give it a single lateral blow to break the axle splines loose in the hub. When backed out, the nut has at least 1/2" inch of clearance and I make sure it doesn't ever bottom out on the bearing race.
I'm not saying it's the best method, and it is very possible that the bearing is damaged but not by the hammer blow
