I had the EXACT same thing happen on my '92. Driving home one night, the light came on, I switched to the voltage gauge and watched it quickly drop to almost 8 volts. By then, the headlights were barely lit and the car was starting to quit out.
I jumped on here and found that it was most likely the voltage regulator. I went and got a new one, swapped it over, put it back in and still nothing. I finally realized that there is a one single wire that hooks onto a spade connector on the alternator to provide the field current. I had broken that off wrestling the alternator out. Fixed the wire and off to the races I went.
One thing though. After I charged my battery again, it would hold a charge for 1 or 2 starts of the car, and would bottom out flat afterward. I think I ran the battery down so hard that I ruined a cell or two, and it never recovered. You might run into that.
