I have a mere '96 CSE 5-spd, not an Aero, but I still think the 9K is the best all-around Saab ever, but as a follow up act I'd give the nod to a 9-5 Aero wagon. That'll probably be my next car.
What's great about the 9K is that it's really a sedan with most of the hauling capacity of a wagon. Yet it has a sleekness to it's lines that the 9-5 Aero wagon lacks.
Is the 9-5 a step up? In some ways. We also have a 9-5 Linear wagon which is great, if low on power, and I have to say that after nearly a year, I like it a lot. An Aero 9-5 is not so much a step up as it is a new answer to the same question. It's not the same as the jump from a C900 to a 9K, but it's still a bit of a leap. And it's not all bad.
If the time has come, buy a 9-5. I know I will.
