As my '98 9000CSE approaches the ripe old age of 10, I too, am also pondering a replacement, but I feel the newest 9-3 & 9-5's are just too GM for me. I am not a fan of sedans and although I value the occasional cargo hauling capability, a wagon is chunkier (is that a real word?) than I prefer which is why I always had hatchbacks ('86 5 door Corolla, '90 3 door Civic, '91 9000 turbo & '98 9000CSE). If you are looking into a new hatch (few and far between, here in the states), try the offerings from Mazda. Both the 3 & 6 series are available in 5 doors, you can even spec the 3 with a 2.3 turbo & on the safty front, all the airbags you want. How about a Subaru Imreza WRX/SAAB 9-2x clone? Also available in 5 doors, but good luck finding 9-2x as have been discontinued. Or may be a 9-3's distant cousin (GASP!) Chevy Malibu Maxx (hatchback), same platform, really! And perhaps what a 9-3 should have been. For my money though, I am leanimg towards a low milege '99~'02 9-3. There are more of them around so there are bound to be some good deals, they are hatachbacks and they are the last SAAB's with some real SAAB DNA, if the smaller size does not deter you. Fortunatly, I won't have to make that decision for at least a couple of years unless something dire happens to my 9K.
