Sure.
Studs are essentially long skinny bolts with the head cut off. One end of the stud threads into a component, in this case the engine block. Another component, the tranny case, is slid over the stud and then held in place with a nut on the protruding end of the stud. As you tighten the nut, it tends to try to pull the stud out of the block. If the stud is not torqued in snugly to the block, then as the nut is tightened, it will pull the stud out and strip the threads in the block.
In order to secure the stud in the block, you put two nuts on the stud and tighten them against each other. You can now apply a wrench or socket to the two nuts and tighten the stud into the engine block.
