The canister itself is rarely a problem. It's just a can of ground charcoal that absorbs and then releases gas fumes. It doesn't get used up. And frankly, if the charcoal were to get contaminated and stopped absorbing, you'd see no difference in the car.
There is a valve on top of the canister. If it doesn't work right, it can act as a vacuum leak, and could cause idle and lean-running problems.
The most likely fault, especially with turbos, is for the hose from the valve to the intake manifold to pop off. The hose interior gets a little oily (normal), and boost pressure wants to push the hose off. If it does, the car runs poorly. It's hard to find, because the canister is buried. If you suspect a vacuum leak, pop the right front turn signal assembly off and look in. Make sure the hoses are connected.
However, if all is fine, then ignore it. Short of a blown hose or a cracked canister (vacuum leak), it isn't a maintenance item.
