From a private seller without a lot of records, I think the car is worth $3,000 +/- . Do a search on Edmunds site to see what the value comes out to - I got a little over $2,000 for my area with assumptions on the condition, etc. Whatever anyone tells you, 170,000 miles is high for a 1996, and getting high for a Saab. I figure the useful life of an Aero to be about 250,000, before you start to have to do expensive stuff like a timing chain, etc, etc. There is no end of what CAN need to be done to a 9000 with this mileage... headgasket ($1,000)... heater core ($500-700)... blower motor $4-500... another clutch w/slave & master cyls, ($1,000)... brakes ($800-1,000), shocks ($800-1,000), exhaust ($5-600) can go on any car, and at any time on a used car that doesn't have records of them being replaced. IF you can do all of those things yourself, figure you can buy parts online from site sponsors for 1/3 what I listed above (dealer/indy prices including labor). Top motor mounts are $100 or so, the DI is $350 or so. I guess my suggestion is offer around $2,500 and be prepared to do some work/spend some more. If you can DIY, $2,500 will go a very long way, and you could get another 100,000 miles. JMHO.....
