Prying ball joint out to get sub-frame down

So, I'm trying to replace the clutch myself. Hadn't had much time to get on it lately. I finally got the bottom tranny bolt with an offset wrench. Not deep offset, just offset closed end 16/18mm at sears. Whee!
Got the total subframe ready to come down and I can't get the ball-joint stud end to break loose. So, I'm asking for any recommendations. I can't find my good pry-bar, but I've skinned my hands good twice, trying to both pry open the ball-joint stud "clamp" and pry down the sub-frame at the same time. Should I spring for a ball joint fork? (can you get one in there?) Do I need to whack the side of the socket/eye? I've sort of done that but I'm afraid of breaking something else and have a hard time getting any oomph into it.
This place is the best!
