I thought it was '86, and they had ABS by '87. Oh well.
In which case I'd still look after the brake boost system. When calipers fail, they usually stick in the gripping position. They usually don't lose the ability to grip. That's because you've got a lot of force available to push them into gripping - that overcomes frictions and grit. When you take your foot off the brake, there is no real force to push the piston back. But with no brake boost, pedal force goes way up for the same braking.
