Since you asked....I bought a '93 aero last spring from the seashore in Rhode Island.Had some bubling around the base of the a pillars and a beat looking windshield so I knew it had to come out for replacement and to inspect the rust problem.Let me tell you my friend..what you see is the "tip of the iceberg" as they say.I had the glass guys come and remove it and told them I would be in touch. What a mess under there, which everyone in the rust belt has but is unaware of due to the gasket hides all the dirty little secrets. The round black preformed goop material that goes against the frame with the glass layed on top is what keeps the water out.The rubber gasket trim piece just gives it a finished look.Water is supposed to drain down and into the aquarium and then through the drains to the ground.Of course the first from the factory windshield and frame work stay nice. It's only over time and windshield replacements where guys go in there with sharp tools and break the paint/primer protection that trouble begins.
The rusty metal has to be sandblasted down to "clean" metal and then you have to treat the clean/bare metal with a rust inhibitor,I used POR-15 products.
After sandblasting mine it looked like clean metal swiss cheese. Some aluminum filler pieces had to be tacked welded in and then lots of applictions of bondo with fibreglass resin followed by regular bondo to reform/recreate the windshield frame.I also did the same sandblast,POR-15,bondo treatment to the wheel wells.By this time the whole car had to be painted, and it was.I opted for factory saab glass and factory trim/gasket kit. That was like 400 bucks. My buddy and I installed the glass and the first time we used a 1/4 inch roll which was too small and it leaked anyway so out it came for a 3/8 bead.So if you plan on keeping the car it should be done right. These days that almost always means doing it yourself. If you don't have the facilities or expertise than get recommendations and inspect every phase of the job to make sure it's done correctly.Insist on sandblasting, rust inhibitor, priming, painting, and factory gasket/trim kit.You could go for after market glass to save 200 bucks. It's all made by Sekurit, but I understand the low qual glass goes to aftermarket and high qual goes to saab.
Any questions?
