I my case, no. My system is charged but I am trying to get it to turn on normally.
In your case, if you are just trying to initially get enough charge into your system to charge it normally, there are many ways to fool the system. My favorite way is to remove the low pressure switch at the dryer and temporarily bypass the contacts. I have been complaining about my later 9000 LP switch being in a bad location compared to earlier 9000s. The most basic way to do it is to run power directly to the clutch coil, either at the coil connection itself (the clamp you described) or at the relay. Just make sure to only have it jumped temporarily because the system is designed to cycle up to pressure, then shut off on it's own.
