That is reassuring then, I'm still waiting for the service sheet that my local Saab dealer is doing for me so hopefully there will be a mention re the AC. If not when the logbook turns up I'll try and contact the previous owner and see if he can shed some light on why the compressor has been bypassed by the fanbelt.
If I didn't mention it before, I noticed that the top two bolts that hold the compressor to the engine block are missing, as if it has been removed at some point. I stuck a cheapo gauge on the inlet port of the compressor and it is showing no pressure at all. Even if the compressor is not turning it should show pressure from any gas in there shouldn't it? All very weird.
At least the fact that the Sanden is stiffer than the Seiko doesn't necessarily mean it is stuffed, thanks to your advice, so I'll see if I can get some more info (and see if the bolts are missing because they're stripped in the block, or maybe just someone who didn't replace them?)
