Test for bad strut bearing? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Car is a 1994 9000CS Turbo 5-speed, 157,000 miles:
I have loud creaking coming from the front left of my car; noisy over bumps and when turning the steering wheel - especially noticable when pushing on the fender and bouncing the car up and down. My car has polyurethane rear bushings on the front control arms, so my first reaction was to take the left one out, disassemble, and relube it (have had to do this before). This did not fix the problem.
This morning, I poked around some more, thought that the noise might be coming from the strut bearing, so I sprayed some white lithium grease into it as best I could from underneath using the thin straw on a spray can. This seems to have quieted it down considerably, though not completely. Is this a valid test to confirm that the strut bearing is shot? I'm planning on a driving trip next week, so I need to order parts ASAP if I'm going to fix this - thanks for your help.
