I don't know a good way to determine if one is marginal. You could use a stethoscope, hose, or screwdriver listening device on the mount as you turn back and forth to see if it's the source of your noise.
It doesn't take very much time to pull out a strut assembly, though, then you'd have a better chance to check for looseness and roughness. You'd probably be more apt to replace it once you'd gotten that far.
