Hi
Just had a look through the troublshooting section of the Haynes manual:
They list:

1. Auxillary belt break - you've already checked this and you would have a "charge warning" light as well as the alternator would stop working.

2. Insufficient coolant - No

3. Thermostat faulty - my personal 1st thing to check. My understanding is they are designed to fail in the open position (i.e. never reach operating temp, rather than overheating). However, if this was stuck in the closed position then it could explain the sudden onset of sky-high temps and your impression of reduced circulation. The good news is an ok DIY replacement - see quasimotors for a nice description (although I found I needed to take less things apart on my CSE). The consensus seems to be pay the extra $ for a saab 82 degree thermostat.

4. Radiator core blocked - as you describe - unlikely given that it is new.

5. Fan faulty - No, yours is running

6. Pressure cap faulty - not sure about this?

7. Inaccurate temp gauge sender - Never heard of this being a problem, so I would assume the temp gauge warning is real until proven otherwise.

8. Airlock in the system. As far as I know the 9k don't have a bleeding system (such as on the C900). I assume that means it will bleed air out itself.

Regarding the water pump. My understanding is that they tend to fail slowly, with the tell-tale slow antifreeze leak. If it had completely seized you would expect a hell of a lot of noise from the auxillary belt etc.

I have my fingers crossed for you that it is your thermostat, but we'll see what others have to say. Good luck
