Of rust flaps and mud treatments..... Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
(I wonder if I have something a bit reversed in that subject line ?)
In a recent post, Muskie was considering whether or not to keep his
'91 9KT, and one reply by Burt Estep said:
'everybody needs to know that you gotta remove the stupid rear mud flaps
as these trap dirt/deb/moisture--cause of the rust.'
First I've heard of removing those flaps - despite having been here for
quite a while and having a good number of 9KTs - anyone have more info ?
Secondly, I posted some while back looking for suggestions in the realm
of rust conversion chemicals/paints/etc...and even after that I felt the
info available everywhere was still someplace between superstition and
just simple advertising - but little in the way of useful experiential
data - SO: I started looking and researching again.
In the process of reading and asking whenever possible I was pointed to
2 products on the shelf of the hardware store, one by Rustoleum and another
by Loctite (not Naval Jelly).
The Loctite product made nifty promises, but it seemed too much like
the 'Rustmort' stuff I had tried before with very disappointing results.
Despite the high price of the stuff - there is a plethora of these things
which are based upon phosphoric acid (like cola...) and though they do
turn the rust to a black substance, it usually turns back too fast to
even get it painted properly by that time - so I was disinclined to try
that one.
The Rustoleum product struck me better and better as I checked it out - it
came in a different packaging than any I'd yet seen, said it makes a
permanent coating even if you don't paint it, and best of all - it came
with a 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' or a full refund of your purchase price
policy printed prominently right under the destructions - which made me
think....those guys are SERIOUS, so I got me some of that one.
Well, today I have used it, and my initial reaction was not strong enough !
This stuff is nothing like any other I have seen - it is more like a paint,
milky in appearance, than the other products which have all been clear and
lightly colored and watery.
It applies more like a paint too, unlike the others which run all over the
place and are messy afterwards as a result - leaving discolored runs in
non-rusted painted areas that are ugly - but this stuff is NEAT to use.
Since I was ready with a can of oil based paint, I waited the correct time
and then checked it out to see if it did a good job, and it sure did.
It didn't run, and where it changed the rust was the best looking of any
I've ever used, so out came the paint & brush.
Obviously, I have to wait a while and see if this holds or if the rust is
back to rust and bleeding through again as the others would - but right
now I have to say I am both impressed and hopeful about this stuff.
In case anyone else wants to check it out, here is what I got at my local
Aubuchon Hardware:
Rust-oleum Rust Reformer, in an 8 ounce plastic jug.
There. As always I am curious to hear if anyone else has any info to share
about this stuff from their own experiences.
Best Wishes,
mark
