Individual level of acceptable crazy Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 11:03:59 In Reply to: Pickup trucks - cool weather - Saab turbo's, 91Aero.jr, Thu, 13 Sep 2007 06:55:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First, there are PU trucks with some pretty big engines. That means some can go VERY fast.
Second, with some of the 'sport' trucks out there, they can have some pretty decent suspensions. Limited by center of gravity and such, but some pretty serious improvement over a gravel hauler.
Here's the big one - What's your acceptable level of crazy? I'll make a bet you weren't running at 10/10ths of your car's capability - I'll bet it wasn't even 5 out of 10. Yes, you may have been going around the corners fast. But at any point did you drift? Any tires lose traction? If not, I'll bet there was a bunch more grip left before drift sets in, and even then, one can control a car in a drift.
That's where the crazy part comes in. Driving at or near the capacity of a vehicle on public roads is crazy and literally criminal. There is no room for error. I'll bet the PUtruck was using up a lot more of his vehicle's capability.
And, we all like to think we're race car drivers. I've driven on a race track, where you can go 10/10ths. If you aren't drifting the car in a turn, you're holding back. And trust me, the speed difference between when you THINK you're going fast and what you can truly wring out of a vehicle is quite vast.
And here's the other part - you weren't upstaged by a PU truck. You were outdriven by a driver. I've out driven a 911 Turbo with my 60 hp Sonett. Is that because the Sonett is so much faster? No. It was the driver. In this case, a driver that was running so far below his car's capability he should turn it in. But I also learned that there are drivers out there that are much, much (much, much!) better than I am. And a really good driver in a mediocre car will beat a decent driver in a great car, because the really good driver will use every bit of his car.
So don't feel bad - you were beaten by a driver, not a car. Yes, we like to think we're fast. I'll bet you can run, but do you think you can keep up with an olympic sprinter? Even if the sprinter was wearing hiking boots?
