But you may not even have been outdriven. There are a whole bunch of trucks out there that will do 0-60 in about 5 seconds. They have tuned up, tweaked V-8s or even V-10s, all with more torque than HP. And a moving turbo-diesel truck can definitely haul up a hill. A 4500 lb truck with 360 hp has a better power to weight ratio than a 3200 lb 9K Aero with 225 hp.
I've had similar things happen on a run I do frequently through the Berkshires and into New York where there are some substantial hills. But I don't think about the truck being able to "beat" me. I think about the fact I'm doing pretty good in an 11-year-old family sedan with a 4 cylinder engine against this big honkin' V-8.
Ari's also right on the difference between real racing speeds and when you think you're going fast. Having had cars at 9/10ths and 10/10ths on a track--where if you go even 1 mph faster you are off the road--it is far different from what you can do on the street.
10/10ths on dry pavement (a track for instance) is a lot like driving as fast as possible on glazed hard pack snow or ice: you are sliding, drifting or about to all the time. And with modern tires and suspensions that's waaaay beyond what you can do on a public road.
