As I recall, the hose normally just leaves the Y-piece within the engine compartment, comes through the firewall and goes straight to the dash gauge so the 2-headed thingy you found was presumably added when the Autometer gauge was installed. At least that's what I did when putting a VDO gauge in place of the clock. The hose to one or both gauges seems to have come off - it must be in there somewhere!
Did you take off the dash top, or take out the radio/ACC? Whichever it was, you could try the other one to see if that helps, maybe?
