As is usually the case, when you brag about something, it kicks you in the butt. I said above that the temp gauge is rock solid and never moves.....last night on my way home from Trick-Or-Treating with my son, I happened to glance down at the gauge and see it about 10:00. As I kept driving, it kept climbing until it almost reached the red. I pulled into a driveway, shut it down and cracked the radiator cap. I could hear fluid moving all around, and upon starting it a few mins later, the temp was back to normal. I left the radiator cap loose and chugged home.
When I got home, I found that the top heater core hose was pretty much rock solid, and the lower was very squishy and cold. I pulled the aquarium cover, unhooked the top hose after bleeding off pressure. On removing the lower (I believe....might have been the top; it was midnight, and I was tired), Lodged in the nipple of the heater core was a bunch of metal crud, all caked up with "antifreeze boogers", the crusty dried-up coolant material.
I hit one inlet with the air hose, and nothing came out the other side of the heater core; plugged.
I pulled the blower motor, put in a spare heater core I had kicking around, reconnected, added coolant and whammy......heat galore.
I'm still curious why the temp spiked like it did....the only time I've seen it do that on vehicles is when either the thermostat doesn't open, or there is an air bubble stuck somewhere.... Thoughts?
