I don't know specifically why Saab chose to have two coolant temperature sensors, but I can suspect why. The way temperature sensors work, it is very difficult to hang a gauge on the sensor and not screw up the reading in the engine control. It can be done, but hard to do it reliably, and we all seem to have this thing about reliability in cars. The solution would be for the engine control to drive the temp gauge. In the earlier cars, the LH control was common with more than just Saabs (Volvo too, and many others), and each of them have their own way of doing things.
It wasn't changed for the T5 control. I'll bet that with the modern comm busses on the newest cars, the 9-5 probably only has one temperature sensor.
I can't access the eeuroparts link from this machine, so I can't check right now. If nobody else chimes in, I'll check tonight.
But that said, why replace the sensor? It seems to be reading correctly.
