Head gaskets on 9K's typically cost in the $600 to $800 range, so unless there are other issues involved that doesn't seem like too much verses the value of the car. The big question is what the rest of the car is like (also, how many miles)? The retail value is relevant only if you going to sell the car. If you're going to drive it then the question is how much use you can get out it. Even with a big ticket item like a rebuilt engine or transmission ($2000 to $3000), if you can get another two or three years use out of the car it's about the best bargain out there. Driving costs money either in the form of payments or repairs. A $300 a month payment comes out to $3600 a year-so repairs are actually pretty cheap. Unless everything else on this car is totally clapped out, it's well worth fixing.
