Transmission whine on accel. and decel. Posted by PGAero [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hey all!
My 5-speed ('93 Aero) is making a whining noise when under load while accelerating or when decelerating (engine braking). It's not too loud, and it's not getting worse. When I disengage the clutch, the noise goes away, so it's not a wheel bearing, and it occurs when the output shaft is loaded.
After doing a search here, most people indicated that it's the output pinion bearing. Additionally, many people have driven cars with this noise for many thousands of miles without failure.
The FAQ at a site sponsor also indicate that the pinion bearing makes this noise when it's beginning to wear. They suggest replacing item #22 in the image below.
Has anyone done this, and how far into the transmission do I need to go to replace that bearing? (Some say it means taking the whole thing apart, and I've also read that you can do it without removing the transmission at all. I think that the same bearing is called about three or four different names by different people.)
I'm still driving the car, and want to arm myself with info before I take the tranny out for no good reason.
Thanks,
Peter
