Hi all - I've got a 1992 Saab 9000 (non-turbo) that I've owned for a few years now. I'm going through my first big set of problems (or at least costly set of problems) and wanted to solicit some advice.
I just took the car in due to a non-starting issue. Ended up being the fuel pump and harness, to the tune of 950$. The guys that worked on it checked the rest of the car out and found a few problems that they thought I should get done ASAP. After these repairs, I was told that I should be in good shape. The problem is that this is another almost 1900$ in repairs--on top of the 950$ I just spent.
So, I was hoping I could get some thoughts on the list of things that I was told about and how much they're charging for them.
Here's the bulk of the list w/ labor costs, too:
Water Pump & Seals: 222. (there's apparently a leak)
Install: 198.
Power Steering hose: 229. (again, a leak)
Install: 145.
Tensioner: 196. (I'm ashamed to say, I don't remember what the deal is with this)
Pulley: 47.
Belt: 52.
Install: 145.
2 Mounts: 251. (the uppers, I believe)
Install: 98.
Coolant: 32.
Does this seem right?
I looked around--Eeuroparts, primarily--and found parts for much cheaper than I'd been quoted. Assuming these are the correct parts listed on the site, is it really bad form to bring in one's own parts? If they freak out at the suggestion that I bring in my own parts, should I go elsewhere or just accept that reaction as the way garages in general will react?
For instance, a Hepu water pump kit is listed for 67. Now, it may not last quite as long as another one, but it's still new and this car is a 1992. I'm not sure I expect to be driving it in another 10 years (especially if gas prices continue to skyrocket...) but 67$ is a lot better than 220$.
Another point that may make a difference: I don't do much driving at all. Maybe 10-15 miles a week and now that it's getting nicer out, I may do more bike riding than anything. Should I bother with all of these repairs anyway? I'm not really mechanically inclined, either...
OK: this has been a lot, and I haven't really edited it. But I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks...
