norvin,
You bought an unmaintained car and it's a shame what happend - not generally the case with older SAAB engines, despite the location of the catalytic converter. Most of the time it's the opposite, i.e. everything besides the engine falls apart. Case in point: my 1983 900S with an unknow number of miles (over 250K, odometer stopped years ago) is about to go to the crusher only because body rust has really taken over.
Your 9000 sounds like it's in generally good shape, it has a newly rebuilt turbo and transmission, hopefully the body is reasonable. The car without a running engine is essentially worthless; on the other hand if you can replace the engine yourself, you will have a car with the three main failure points renewed, and they will probably not fail again for the life of the car. If you don't want to rebuild the engine, there should be a lot of used engines out there, some with low miles, that have hopefully been maintained a little bit.
