changing compressor is pretty easy, it's right there at the front/top of motor. If you don't have a vacum pump to properly evacuate the system I would consider Abusot's advice and make the repairs (including hose and any o-rings you can get to and new drier)and then take it to a shop you trust and have them evacuate/recharge. Their equipment will put in the correct charge quickly. I wouldn't pay more than $45-$50 per pound of R-12 if you keep it that way. Less if it's retrofitted to R-134.
