Really struggling with timing, need urgent help!!

1997 9000 Aero 125K miles

I posted a couple of days ago and did some some responses but they were mainly pointing out that I should have marked the chain before removing the cam gears (doing a headgasket job). I did mark it but my neighbour rubbed the paint off when holding the chain, so I'll use zip ties if I ever do this job again.

consequently, I a struggling with getting the timing right. I am at TDC on piston 1, I align the marks on the crank pulley and have the cam gears with the line on the top of the outside of the cam gears perpendicular to the head. All good so far, but I do have a bit of slack between the cam gears, though not enough to put on the next tooth of the cam.

Yet when I feed in the tensioner (suitably retracted first and yes, I am putting the body of the tensioner in first, then the plunger, spring and bolt)and move the crank pulley I hear the tensioner ratchet out but then I see that the crank pulley mark has moved by about an inch, yet my cam marks are unchanged. I've tried for the last couple of days (in the road outside my house with the most godawful sh**ty rain showers interrupting me every 20 mins or so) and I may be losing my mind!!!

What am I doing wrong?

I know that if I am a tooth out the idle will be rough, but I have to pick my wife up from the airport tomorrow and I am tempted to just reassemble as is and deal with the rough idle some other time, but it would be such a shame to not do it right.

Please help!!!
